I greatly appreciate your willingness to ...Jwskud,

I greatly appreciate your willingness to share your family's own personal experiences and struggles in this area because it is an encouragement to me like you wouldn't believe (and I needed that today more than ever so thank you very much!). When my responsibilities became clear to me, and after I got over the initial guilt of having failed my kids for so long, the real challenge began.

Introducing catechesis at the dinner table following a meal was, and is, extremely difficult. My two eldest kids moaned and groaned and complained. It's boring, it's horrible, etc. I felt like I was trying to catechize Satan himself! And these are kids who are exposed weekly to the Word - I've faithfully dragged them to Divine Service week after week for years, only missing when someone was very ill or during our one vacation trip to Disneyworld...

I encourage you to just keep at it. Ignore the complaints and let them heap burning coals on your head while you patiently endure. Press on towards the goal.

I can say that after a year of very basic catechesis (basically just hearing and memorizing one commandment and its meaning per week, or listening to a Bible story and then some Q&A), I was greatly edified at the following exchange one evening:

me discussing the 5th commandment "What does this mean?"
9 year old son, "We should fear and love God so that we do not hurt or harm our neighbor......"
3 year old daughter shouts out, "IN HIS BODY"

Wow, I was floored! Not only were the 13- and 9-year olds getting it, the 3 year old was memorizing it, too! What a blessing.

And yet, each night is still a battle. But it's a battle worth fighting. Godspeed! jwskudhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15641383927216557610noreply@blogger.com
